Why “Stone Soup”?
The name Stone Soup Urban Ministries comes from an old folktale with a powerful lesson:
A weary traveler arrives in a village during a time of scarcity. The villagers, each holding tight to their own small portions of food, claim they have nothing to share. So the traveler fills a pot with water, drops in a single stone, and begins to boil a “stone soup.” Curious, one villager offers a few carrots, another adds potatoes, another brings spices, until the whole village contributes what they have. By the end, what began as “nothing” becomes a nourishing feast for everyone.
The message is simple but profound: when people come together and each gives what they can, something greater than the sum of its parts is created.

Stone Soup Urban Ministries in Action
Just like the folktale, Stone Soup Urban Ministries believes that everyone in the Sandtown-Winchester community holds a piece of the solution to poverty, neglect, and disinvestment.
Here are just a few examples of the gifts people bring to the table:

  • A neighbor’s skill in plumbing

  • A local church offering meeting space

  • A retired resident willing to mentor youth

  • A business leader with resources for training programs

When these contributions come together under one mission, they create a community where education grows, homes are repaired, jobs are created, safety improves, and hope is restored.
Stone Soup Urban Ministries serves as the pot where these efforts combine, a place where collaboration transforms scarcity into abundance and empowers people to build the future they deserve.
